The Hidden Ones Doppelganger Guide: Best Loadouts and Stats

The Doppelganger Loadout is the support layer that decides whether your main character gets a second escape, a wake-up steal or a burst window. The budget is only 4 points, so almost every choice is a trade. This page covers the rarities, the stat rules and the loadouts worth spending those points on.

A Doppelganger Loadout (身外身) is not a summon and not a second character. It is a small set of active tools attached to the character you are already playing, drawn from a shared roster and paid for with a fixed point budget. The interesting decisions are all about opportunity cost: the tool you bring is the tool you cannot bring instead.

What you are actually building

The system has two halves. The first is the active doppelganger: a button you press in a match for a specific effect, such as a bind, a slow, a teleport or a burst. The second is the stat layer: the rarity, the substats and the set bonus that apply to your character while the loadout is equipped.

That split is why two players with the same active can perform very differently. One has the right button and the wrong stats; the other has a mediocre button and perfect percentage rolls. In practice the stats matter more in PvE, where the fight is long enough for them to compound, and the active matters more in PvP, where one bind or one teleport decides a round.

They are also support: they cover a gap in the kit instead of replacing it. A rushdown character wants a tool that stops the opponent from leaving; a control character wants a tool that survives being rushed. Loadouts come in three archetypes, and the label tells you which stats the piece rolls: attack (crit and element damage, for Feng Baobao or Zhang Chulan), defense (max HP, lower qi cost, qi when hit, for a formation holder like Wang Ye) and balanced (a split of both plus cooldown reduction, for hybrids such as Zhang Lingyu). Match the archetype to the job before you read the substats.

Rarity, the third substat and two-piece sets

There are four rarity tiers: green, blue, purple and orange. Orange is the top tier, with better base stats and a third random substat that lower tiers do not get. That extra line is why orange pieces are worth chasing: it is another roll on the stat that scales your damage.

Rarity and what it changes
TierBase statsSubstatsWhen to use it
GreenLowestFewestEarly filler only
BlueLowLimitedEarly filler only
PurpleMiddleTwo useful lines possibleTransitional pieces while you hunt orange
OrangeHighestThird random substatLong-term investment; the only tier worth heavy rerolling

Set bonuses activate with two or more pieces of the same name or series. There are no four-piece bonuses to chase, which simplifies the build: the goal is a finished orange two-piece first, then high-quality scattered pieces to fill the remaining slots with the right substats.

This is also why a pair of matching 2-point doppelgangers can be better than one flashy 3-point tool. Two pieces of the same series can activate a set bonus and still leave you with useful actives, whereas a single expensive piece consumes most of the budget and gives you no set at all.

Spending four points

The in-match budget is 4 points. Costs in the final test come in 2-point and 3-point tiers, which produces one awkward arithmetic fact: a 3-point active plus a 2-point active is 5 points, and that is not allowed. In practice a 3-point anchor leaves a single point that usually cannot buy a second active.

The two workable structures are:

  • Two 2-point tools for 4 points, ideally from the same series so you also get the two-piece bonus.
  • One 3-point anchor plus the best stat piece you own, accepting that you are playing with a single active.
Correction: four points, not five

Earlier English hands-on previews from December 2024 reported 5 doppelganger points. The final test uses 4. Every loadout on this page is costed against the 4-point budget; ignore the older five-point figure.

Four-point doppelganger budget: two 2-point tools, one 3-point anchor plus a stat piece, and a 5-point combination that is not allowed Loadout structure Points used 2 + 2 Two actives from the same series 4 / 4 3 + stat One anchor and one stat piece 3 / 4 3 + 2 Over budget, so not allowed 5 / 4
The arithmetic is the whole system. Two 2-point actives fill the budget; a 3-point anchor leaves room for stats, not a second active.

The budget also explains why the opening of a match looks passive. Doppelgangers begin on cooldown, so the first roughly 20 seconds are played without your support tools. Do not force a hard exchange during that window. Poke, take space, and wait for the cooldowns to come up before you commit to the sequence that actually needs the doppelganger.

Substats for a main DPS, a support and a sub-DPS

The general rule is that percentage substats beat flat values, because percentage scaling grows with the character's level while a flat number does not. All main stats should be rolled toward percentage lines where the option exists; fixed defensive values are the usual trap.

Substat priorities by role
RolePriorityWhy
Main DPSCrit damage, attack %, matching element damageThese are the three multipliers that compound on every hit; flat defense lines do almost nothing for damage
SupportCooldown reduction, max qi, healing receivedCoverage and uptime matter more than personal damage on a character who is not the win condition
Sub-DPSA mix of cooldown reduction and offensive percentage linesNeeds to cycle skills often while still contributing damage during the main DPS's downtime

Do not reroll a purple piece into perfection. Purple double-substat pieces are the intended bridge while you collect orange ones, and burning rare reroll materials on a piece you will replace is the most common early progression mistake. Save the locks and the serious rerolls for orange pieces with the right first line.

For a defense-oriented character such as Wang Ye, the support priorities are better than a third offensive roll, because his job is maintaining a formation and absorbing pressure. The Wang Ye guide covers why max HP and cooldown reduction matter more to him in PvP than crit.

The loadouts people actually run

The table below lists the doppelgangers that show up most often in final-test builds, with the point costs and cooldowns the data confirms. A dash means the source did not publish a number.

Common Doppelganger Loadouts in the final test
DoppelgangerPointsCooldown / rangeWhat it doesFits
Earth-Burrowing Qilin2—Can hit a downed target; the standard wake-up steal. Release about half a second before the wake-upAny aggressive finisher
Quicksilver Spill2—Applies a 50% slow on hit, a soft control that keeps the target in rangeCharacters who need the opponent to stay close
Celestial Blossom3—Three lock-on rockets; all risk moves, cannot be interrupted or parry-counteredWang Ye, Lu Linglong
Luanjin Tuo3—Binds for 3 s and deals up to 1800% earth damagePvP anti-rush and wake-up pressure
Falling Thunder2—Multi-hit strike that baits guardPressure characters who want the opponent to block
Eight Gates Carry——Displacement that breaks guard and resets your normal stringDefensive resets when you are being crowded
Wind Rope—8 m, 30 s, 1.8 s bindRanged bind; pulls an airborne target to the ground for a 2 s stunZhuge Qing, ranged control
Golden Sea Dragon Grasp——Priority tool and wake-up punisherRong Shan, offensive wake-up play
Zero Point Zero One—5 m tracking radiusAuto-tracks a nearby enemy with continuous slashesZhang Lingyu, characters who need a reliable gap closer
Earth Fire——High burst that can link into the ultimateBurst characters with a spare point structure
Venom Dart——Poison chip damage that keeps ticking after the exchangeAttrition and PvP pressure
Nine Earths Power——Instantly refills stamina and grants one instance of super armorStamina-hungry characters such as Lu Linglong
Five Thunders Purify350 s; hits within 10 mA talisman strikes every 2.5 s; it can be guarded but cannot be parry-counteredZhang Chulan, Feng Baobao
Swift Thunder Step——Mobility tool for closing, escaping and repositioningZhang Chulan

Celestial Blossom and Luanjin Tuo are the two 3-point tools that most often justify the anchor structure. Blossom is the answer to a guard-heavy opponent because everything it fires is a risk move; Tuo is the answer to a rushdown opponent because the 3-second bind is long enough to reverse the round. Both are expensive by design, and the remaining point will not buy a second active.

Wind Rope is the standout ranged pick because its 8-meter reach and 2-second airborne stun give a control character a way to turn a juggle into a grounded stun. That is why it appears on Zhuge Qing, and the Zhuge Qing guide explains the exact follow-up after it lands.

PvE versus PvP: same pool, different picks

In PvE, the useful doppelgangers are the ones that add damage, uptime or safety against a boss that does not dodge. Earth-Burrowing Qilin is the best example: it hits a downed target, so it converts every knockdown into extra damage and covers the boss's wake-up. Five Thunders Purify is the other long-fight pick, because its talisman keeps hitting within 10 meters and cannot be parry-countered.

In PvP, the useful picks are the ones that answer a player decision. Luanjin Tuo stops a rush. Quicksilver Spill keeps a slippery target in range. Celestial Blossom beats a player who wants to sit behind guard. Nine Earths Power is the emergency button when the opponent catches you with no stamina. None of these picks is about raw damage; they deny the opponent their preferred next action.

The wake-up layer is worth separating out. A knockdown is only half a win; the other half is what happens when the opponent stands up. Earth-Burrowing Qilin and Luanjin Tuo are the two tools that most directly steal that moment, which is why the combat system page treats doppelgangers as the core anti-wake-up answer rather than a damage slot.

The 2v2 exclusives

Liangyi Xiangdou adds three doppelgangers that are not part of the normal 1v1 or 3v3 pool. They are support tools first, and they change how a team should spend its cooldowns.

2v2-only doppelgangers
DoppelgangerEffectBest use
Eight Gates EscortTeleports you to a teammate and grants 0.5 s of invincibilitySave a partner who is caught in a combo, or rejoin the fight after being separated
Qi-Shock CarryTeleports and blows away enemies within 5 mBreak up a double-team and create space around your partner
Spring-Returning HandRevives a downed teammate at 30% health, once per matchHold it for the deciding round rather than spending it early

Spring-Returning Hand is the one that changes match strategy. Because it works once per match, the team that saves it for the final round has a real comeback tool, while the team that burns it in round one has already spent its safety net. The PvP guide covers the Enraged State and Comeback rules that sit around these tools.

Upgrade order and the first 20 seconds

The resource order is main DPS > support > sub-DPS. Finish the main damage dealer's orange two-piece and percentage substats first, then move to the support who keeps that damage dealer alive, and only then touch the sub-DPS. Spreading upgrades evenly across the roster is the fastest way to end up with three characters who are all under-geared.

Two housekeeping rules protect that investment. First, buy the weekly limited doppelganger essence and reroll locks in full every week; the caps are there to stop overflow, and missing them is a permanent loss. Second, do not throw away scattered orange pieces with two good gold lines just because they are not part of your current set. Keep them for the next character or the next stat shift.

Redundant pieces can be dismantled into doppelganger essence for upgrades. They cannot be traded, so there is no reason to hoard duplicates. The progression guide covers how that essence fits into the wider upgrade path, and the artifact guide covers the separate artifact slots that sit alongside this system.

The last habit is pacing. With doppelgangers on cooldown for the opening 20 seconds, the first exchange is a probe, not a commitment. Learn what the opponent does when your support tools are unavailable, then spend the first cooldown on the answer you actually need.
